Let’s crack the social media mold.

Social media platforms and content sharing websites offer tremendous value, yet they are also abundant and riddled with problems, issues, flaws, pain points, and annoyances. With growing choices and splintering options, users join and belong to numerous platforms to fulfill and satisfy their speckled social, business, content, creative, media, connection, storage, sharing, community, and networking needs. But to achieve all of users’ desired needs, wishes, wants, and nice to haves, there hasn’t been one platform in the kaleidoscope mix that has effectively delivered in all categories.

Christmas Mandala-snowflake Kaleidoscope Sequence. Abstract BackThis isn’t to suggest that there needs to be an umbrella platform that caulks the gap and supplies everything for everybody. However, for those seeking better time management, efficiency and effectiveness with their social internet endeavors, integrity, and a central, secure, and safe portal to hold and share what’s truly relevant, essential, and important, while aligned with being the change *and* taking action, — the search continues.

Existing platforms provide their unique flavor, their visionary contribution to the digital realm, and engage their eclectic users within the constraints of their distinct offerings. Each of the prevailing social media platforms have their limits of features, capabilities, technology, market, added value, bells and whistles, and scope. Some social media platforms have cool feature sets and seamless designs, while others offer a cluttered and noisy interface. Some have most of the desired package tools and community engagement, but miss the mark on privacy, censorship, reach, algorithms, functionality, relevance, or usability. While others have lost their zest and appeal and gradually become antiquated with each newer shinier platform.

social network, communication in the global computer networksWhat drives users to join and stay, or bail and flock? What keeps users engaged, interested, and loyal? Why do people gravitate towards certain social media companies, functions, and products? This Social Media Use 2018 study published by the Pew Research Center for Internet and Technology provides insight and addresses social media trends and demographics.

Does critical mass determine if a social media platform will be widely accepted, relevant, valuable, and worthwhile? Does it start out as trickles of interest, then a rolling boil, then a tipping point in critical mass, leading to full migration and popularity? How much does the quality of users over the quantity matter when utilizing a network?

Current 2018 marketing statistics reveal fascinating consumer behaviors regarding content marketing, social media, video marketing, advertising, and more. Companies pay enormous amounts to marketing research agencies to track digital trends, consumer behaviors, and dollars spent.

However, despite all the data collected and everything we’ve learned about how people use social media, much of social media falls flat. The existing structure and design of social media platforms, when primarily used as giant advertising vessels for mega-corporations and propaganda machines for governments, have become painful to be apart of and witness. The way in which social media networks and these public forums have been co-opted and manipulated is disgusting and the tolerance for social media to continue to be used and abused this way is sharply shrinking. The commodifying of our data and our lives has also run its course. And let’s not forget the rampant outrageous censorship. Have we had enough of being rats in their wicked wheel of misfortune and maze? Has anyone else noticed we have been circling around the drain for too long?

Isn’t it time for the masses to crack the code, break the mold, break down the systemic dysfunction, detach from the dependence, the addiction, and commodification of one’s data and info? For real this time! What are you waiting for?

Are you waiting for a decentralized platform, a truly independent utility, — built using blockchain? An outlet to freely share content that you’ve created with whom you choose – no-holds-barred? Customizable to meet your needs? No advertising?! A secure vault to store, save, catalogue, and organize all of your data, media, files, publications, photos, videos, and other media creations? A streamlined way for you to leverage what you create and design, with the ability to not only share, but monetize your intellectual property and ideas? A platform that encourages activism, advocacy, and taking action? Are you waiting for a platform where you can host and be apart of groups without the fear that the group will be removed and deleted for some mystery reason?

Milky Way And Snowy Mountains. Fantastic View With Mountain RidgThe founder of Medel.la was waiting for all of these capabilities and much, much more — out of pure necessity and identifying where the holes are, but also in anticipation of our vanishing freedom of speech and the corporate take-over of the existing platforms. Why wait when one can create?! This is what stepping up for the people looks like. This is what innovating from insight, inspiration, and leadership looks like. This is what empowerment looks like.

Let’s bring our creative juices, our unbridled spirits, our bold and wild ideas, and our open hearts to this creative cutting-edge collaborative venture. Be apart of what it feels like. Be an innovator – Help us grow a new platform!

The social media landscape, in its current reiteration, feels like it has derailed from its initial purpose, intention, and scope.

What was the intended purpose for social media from a user perspective?

'social Media' Highlighted In Green

Was it meant to be a public forum, for free speech, to connect, share, collaborate, educate, inform, locate old friends, keep in touch with family/friends, make business contacts, provide feedback to businesses, and voice our concerns? To also connect networks and groups of people with shared interests, dreams, and goals? Social media are used for assorted purposes by a diversity of users. Since the launch of social media networks, how these sharing platforms have been utilized has drastically evolved and expanded.

Social Media Wordcloud GlowingHave we co-created a monster and hand fed it our desires, shopping habits, behaviors, interests, friendships, love lives, deepest secrets, and the inner-workings of our minds? Are we effectively sprinkling the breadcrumbs to our demise? Where are we headed if we continue this commodified course with us being the product?

What has social media really become?

Some say it’s partly a sludgy cess-pool buffet of trolls, saturated with advertising, sponsored, boosted, and paid messages, untrustworthy news agencies, clutter, distraction, rampant censorship, low integrity, no accountability, disappearance of core values, time-consuming, a huge privacy breach, and the precise tracking of our lives. Yet we’re not easily able to retrieve our information, comments, and history. And somehow we feel the need to continue sliding back to the hamster wheel under the illusion we are making progress?

Social media networks, like mainstream media outlets, sold us to their funders and sponsors, while they prostituted and paraded our personal information to the government, private corporations, and blatantly breached our privacy. But people stay. Not only do they stay, they become more entrenched, consumed, addicted, and don’t seem bothered or care. Why?

We know they are censoring, lying, suppressing the truth, spying, big brother monitoring, converting us – their product into dollars, pulling us into their system with their enticing web. We traded our privacy for technology, access to millions of users, convenience, digital community, and have fallen prey to their consumer-driven games to keep us there, like cattle or mice with amnesia who cannot escape the maze or cornfield. We are stuck within a gigantic advertisement and social experiment, our heads spinning from the overload of information, clutter, messaging, and distractions. This has sprawled out of control. But. we. return.

Since their launch year, social media networks have expanded and each platform offers their unique imprint and offerings to varying demographics. The launch of LinkedIn (2003), MySpace (2004), FaceBook (2004), YouTube (2005), Twitter (2006), Pinterest (2009), and Instagram (2010), birthed a technologically based cutting-edge format for connecting, engaging, and sharing visual and written content to the masses aside from traditional mass media outlets. There are redeeming qualities about each of the popular platforms and they serve different needs and purposes. Yes, there are benefits and gems amongst the sludge and crud or social media would have dried up long ago. Let’s not discount the merits of social media and the viral nature and power social media have.

Computer Keyboard With Social Media KeysBut what really keeps you returning despite the negative issues or pain points you experience? What inspires you to continue to connect on those platforms? Is it simply an addiction, habitual behavior, or does it offer something more fulfilling? Is it similar to being in a dysfunctional relationship where some feel it’s more convenient to just stay?

Is it really worth it to trade convenience, chronic connection, and instant access for your time, freedom, and privacy?

Why did you originally join social media or other content sharing networks? Is it possible for us to get back to the root and the foundation of why we wanted to connect in the first place? Let’s use our past and current experiences of social media, both positive, negative and neutral, to inform and leverage our motivations to move ahead and develop a revolutionary path. Together.

Your Perspective Decides: What will you choose to see and bring?

Have societies lost touch with humanity, integrity, ethics, and universal truths? Have we surpassed the point of no return? Is the zombie apocalypse on its way? Does it feel like the satanists and the insane are running the world into the ground with no regard for anything other than their sick and twisted, selfish interests? Have the environmental toxins, pollutants, and industrial poisons saturated our brains, dumbed us down, numbed our hearts — dimming our connection to our higher selves and souls? Has this made it easier to control and manipulate us?

Are we in a humanitarian, human rights, environmental, economic, and global crisis? Or are we experiencing a global awakening,  an unveiling of truth — a shift in consciousness and paradigm shift? Are all of these realities happening simultaneously?

Are things really any different than they were 100 years ago or are we just more aware of the corruption and illusion? All, some, or none of the above?

Your perspective decides.

dslr photography lens. camera lens isolated with bokeh lights.Given the current media-saturated culture and ubiquitous nature of fear-based, emotionally triggered, and bias-filled news, propaganda, and disinformation, it’s easy to lose perspective and be sucked into the warped matrix of doom and gloom. But it is also possible to pull back, research more deeply, become more aware without being paralyzed by fear, and seek out a variety of sources to balance, inform, and ground your perspective.

However you feel, your opinion, what you identify with, and what you seek, is determined by your own personal bias, point of view, and your prior experiences and knowledge. Your perspective is shaped by who you are and your journey. It is partly based on your past, your present, what you anticipate for the future, and what you choose to tune in to and see.

Your perspective and perception affect your reality and how you view and process information through your personal lens. The lens you look through as an individual impacts how you receive or distort information. What you see or do not notice is filtered through your personal filter and based on a multitude of factors.

“We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are.” – Anais Nin

Consider all the unlimited factors that influence your perspective from your race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, physical abilities or disabilities, your vision capabilities, socioeconomic status, whether you are married, partnered, or single, if you have children, step-children, raised from a divorced or coupled home, education level, pets, political affiliation, age, health, what geographic region you live, if you’re homeless, level of consciousness, childhood, trauma experienced, current circumstances, your level of awareness, and much more. All of these factors code your story, unique perspective, truth, illusion, beliefs, perception, and expectations.

What perspective do you bring and offer as you maneuver through your day? How does your perspective affect what you observe, see, process, and integrate into your life? Perspective informs and shapes the way you approach your life, what you choose to see about your self, others, and how you view and embody the world around you.

“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” – Henry David Thoreau

What you perceive as truth, reality, or illusion, is highly dependent upon, and subjective, based on who you are, what you focus upon, and how you interpret information. The angle from which you draw upon determines what you include and exclude from your point of reference and experience.

What you see depends not only on what you see, but what you look from (1)What do you perceive as truth, reality, or illusion? What is distorted based on who you are and what you see? How myopic or wide is your lens and perspective? Is there room for growth and expansion? How open are you to another side of an issue, opinion, or experience?

bigstock--159231797There are endless ways to build upon, deepen, and broaden your perspective.

  • Bring awareness to your perspective and adjust as needed.
  • Peel back the horse blinders and widen your perspective; it’s a bridging opportunity for respectful dialogue with others.
  • Be open to new perspectives and engage ideas that question your ways of knowing and the angles in which you perceive.
  • Recognize where your perspective can be stretched and loosened in the areas where you may default to rigidity and shut down.
  • Allow for flexibility.
  • Release the resistance and be receptive to challenge your perspective.
  • Listen.
  • Learn something new.
  • Welcome the clarity and possibilities that exist outside your comfort zone.

Your perspective is just a “spec” of the full tapestry in the beautiful mosaic of life, after all.

An Opportunity in the Misinformation Age

The speed at which social media content is shared and spread breeds inaccuracy, misinformation, half-truths, and disinformation. This coupled with our hectic, time-compressed lives, and the desire to stay informed, up-to-date on news, information, the latest environmental or emergency crises, and issues du jour, becomes the perfect superficial social media smorgasbord riddled with skimmed headlines, shoddy journalism, a swirl of opinions, questionable facts, eye-catching memes, and misleading images and infographics.

It’s typical for articles, photos, and videos to be posted, re-shared, and circulated without much consideration for content accuracy, context, or truth. Inaccurate content, dishonest headlines, deceptive visuals, and articles distributed from untrustworthy news sources are pervasive.

Misinformation and the Spread of Fake News

It’s effortless to click, share, and re-post a story or an article found online – many do this without actually reading the article, research, or study first-hand. It’s commonplace – but not necessarily out of bad intentions or the deliberate desire to perpetuate the “fake news” trend, but out of ease, habit, and the lack of time, energy, and effort it takes to verify. It is time consuming to double-check and verify sources and yet another step to determine if it’s newsworthy, trustworthy, evidence-based, and worthy of attention.

Is there even a pause to research, investigate further, verify sources, fact-check, or dig deeper? Why wouldn’t you want to disseminate information that is correct, accurate, and truthful? Wouldn’t that be the ethical path to take?

Magnfiying glass on the word investigate to illustrate detective

Is there any journalistic integrity or quality standards left? Or is it all about the likes, follows, and the shares content receives – whether it is validated and vetted or not? Does anyone care about the truth and quality of what is delivered across the media inter-webs?

vector smart phone social media iconsOn an individual level, holding each other accountable to higher standards when sharing news, articles, and content on social media is a prudent move in the right direction. For mainstream news outlets and independent press agencies to be sloppy about fact-checking, inept at digging deeper, and their absence of journalistic integrity, is counterintuitive to the purpose of reporting, investigating, and disseminating news for a wider audience.

Often news agencies who generate content swiftly are time-crunched and bound to harsh deadlines. Media outlets and their content producers are unable to thoroughly vet stories or properly fact-check and validate. The erosion of trust in the media and news organizations has been negatively cascading for decades. Trust in the mainstream corporate-owned media is at an all time low. Discerning viewers and critical thinkers have little trust in the information offered and are becoming more media savvy and media literate.

When sharing a news story, a random post, an article or research study online, it’s essential to first understand where the content originated. Follow up with some foundational media literacy questions to determine its accuracy, context, and relevance. Learn to decipher, decode, and deconstruct the media and information you consume. Share from trusted sources and be apart of elevating the quality of the content we all access and appreciate.

Verify Magnifying Glass Check Facts Research 3d Render IllustratResearch, understand, and verify your sources.

  • Who owns the website or media outlet where the story, article, research, etc., is published and featured?
  • Who wrote the content? Why did the writer, author, reporter, or news correspondent report the story that way?
  • What bias did the writer, producer, or owner bring to the story based on who they are and how their experiences have shaped their perspective?
  • Who sponsored, funded, or paid for the article, story, research, or message?
  • Was it independent of financial pressure to express a certain viewpoint, message, or idea?
  • Is the information accurate, trustworthy, and reliable?

Compare the information to other reliable sources.

  • Are you able to locate variations of the story or article you presented? Was it reported or re-published elsewhere? By a reliable source?
  • Check facts from the original sources, studies, and discover the evidence for yourself.
  • Does it have references, resources, or a bibliography with linked sources? If resource links are embedded within the story, are they verifiable? Can they be validated?

Examine the source, the message, and the media used.

  • Is the writer or content producer using primary or secondary research, interviews, content, data, findings, etc.? If not, where does the information originate?
  • Confirm citations from the author, writer, and content creator. Are they a respected authority or known in their field as an expert? If not, are they supporting their findings with those that are knowledgeable and respected in their given areas of expertise?
  • What’s missing from the story, coverage, article, etc.? (Viewpoints, perspective, relevant and pertinent info, context, background, history, implications, consequences, etc.)
  • What is the purpose of the content/message/story?
  • How is the information scripted and used to propagate a narrative, agenda, or ideology?
  • What additional information do you need to seek to clarify and understand more deeply?
  • Have the images or videos been doctored, adjusted, photoshopped, or digitally manipulated or enhanced?
  • Are the sound bytes and video clips real and authentic or have they been altered and edited to change the context and meaning?
  • Has the video footage been photoshopped, doctored, or manipulated to corrupt the meaning and disrupt the message?

Who is fact-checking the fact-checkers?

bigstock--147762143

When using fact-checking services, research their validity, and trustworthiness. Are they reliable? Are they biased in how they fact-check, report, and present their information? And if so, how? Who are they funded and sponsored by? Who are their owners and advertisers? Questions that examine the money trail are critical. Ownership influences content and it certainly affects what facts are included or omitted.

Are the fact-checking companies or organizations just an extension from the very agencies, governmental, or organizations they are hired to fact-check info and news about? Or are they truly equipped to provide a neutral fact-checking service? Do they have the capability to verify information independent from conflicts of interest?

An opportunity exists in the mis- and disinformation age.

We are at a prime opportunity to upgrade the defunct social and mass media content sharing landscape. Let’s raise the bar of quality on what is shared through re-posting and spreading content online. Be discerning in what you choose to distribute and what sources you trust. Choose wisely. Take the time and extra effort to circulate original and authentic news and quality information. It’s better to save the article or post to read later, than to rush to share it without vetting its veracity. Question its content, truth, and facts. Be proactive when you recognize false or inaccurate content. If something doesn’t adhere to the truth, kindly correct the mis- and disinformation by offering verified resources.

There is no excuse for us not to research further and dig deeper when we have instant open access to the intelligence and knowledge base of humankind right at our fingertips.

Join us at Medel.la in contributing to an innovative user-driven platform through content creation, collaboration, and connection with those you trust and respect.

Be an outlier in a world of conformists.

“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” ― John F. Kennedy

Members of society that have been successfully conditioned, conform. They resign themselves, lose themselves, and succumb to sameness, uniformity – homogeneity. Groomed to follow. Conditioned to conform. Programmed to please, consume, and accept the status quo. Taught to be submissive, follow orders, and obey authority. Operating on auto-pilot as cogs in the rat race wheel greased by the desire to fit in, while begging to be accepted. Miserable, empty, stagnant, and stuck. As a result, they become reliant on the very system that oppresses, controls, and abuses them and the masses.

“One believes things because one has been conditioned to believe them.” ― Aldous Huxley
Conformity is the contrary to uniqueness, individuality, expressing your authentic self, and being empowered. Is it much easier and convenient to conform than to identify with who you really are than eject yourself from a system built on manipulation and illusion?

“The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it’s conformity.” ― Rollo May

More “conformity” definitions:
  • Similarity in form or character; agreement.
  • Action or behavior in correspondence with socially accepted standards, conventions, rules, or laws: conformity to university regulations.
  • State of things being similar, or identical.
  • A point of resemblance; a similarity.
  • The ideology of adhering to one standard or social uniformity.
Screen Shot 2018-11-12 at 11.17.23 PM
More “conditioned” definitions:
  • Subject to or dependent on a condition or conditions.
  • Prepared for a specific action or process.
  • Psychology – Exhibiting or trained to exhibit a conditioned response.
  • Prepared for a specific use.
  • Exhibiting a conditioned reflex.
“A fair and just society offers equality of opportunity to all. But it cannot promise, and should not try to enforce, sameness.” ― Christina Hoff Sommers
Who benefits from a society of homogenous thinkers? Those in power, the ruling class, including bureaucratic, religious, military, and big business leaders. The power elite – “powerful people who hold a disproportionate amount of wealth, privilege, political power, or skill in society.” These power-players influence policy decisions with their actions, opinions, and actions.

Why would those in power want the populace to be conditioned and uniform?

How do they benefit from a society of conformists and followers?
bigstock--201639103
Conditioned clones are far easier to control. Literal crowd control mentality. Through this regulation of control, there is a false sense of security and perceived independence by those who conform and follow. It’s much easier to control a group with collectively similar beliefs, patterns, and behaviors, than it is to allow dissenters and resisters.

But what really happens when dissenters break out and challenge authority? Question the official narratives? Speak against those in power and the ideologies they push? They are often silenced, outcast, censored, called conspiracy theorists or crazy, denied being accepted, marginalized, and certainly not given corporate-owned media coverage and airtime.

How does the ruling class and the power elite condition?

Through the mass media’s repetition on television, radio, print and social media. Through the illusion of “choice” of media outlets and channels — when in fact they are owned by a select few, — only five to six media conglomerates in the United States. The grooming, brainwashing of what’s accepted is also embedded within society, culture, institutions, schools, and government. Expectations are carefully scripted within narratives and deliberately woven. Roles and desired behaviors, deliberately constructed. The conditioning becomes seamless, stealth, and unnoticeable, like the fish in water, “what water?”

Fish School Arrow Shaped Against The Grain Perspective
Through the power of language, conditioning is implemented. Language and connotations influence minds, behaviors, perceptions, beliefs, and actions. Both the choice of language and connotations play a significant role in scripting what’s acceptable. To deviate from the “norm” and the noun, “social deviate, are often given negative connotations. A “rebel”, “rebellion”, and “to rebel”, also hold a negative charge in the context of what’s acceptable and preferred within society. The same holds true for “activists”, those who are “anti-establishment”, “radical”, and “counter-culture”. Many of these condescending and shaming terms are often synonymous with traitor, instead of being aligned with catalysts for change.

An outlier, a rebel, and a renegade do not exist within the limits; they break the boundaries and the norm. It’s the only way to survive from being swallowed up and engulfed by mediocrity. A rebel goes against the grain and prefers not to be corralled. Does what’s not popular and lives beyond the dominant culture ideals.

Rebel

  • To refuse allegiance to and oppose by force an established government or ruling authority.
  • To resist or defy an authority or a generally accepted convention.
  • To feel or express strong unwillingness or repugnance.

Renegade

  • One who rejects a religion, cause, allegiance, or group for another; a deserter.
  • An outlaw; a rebel.
  • Of, relating to, or resembling a renegade; traitorous.
  • To become a deserter or an outlaw.
  • A disloyal person who betrays or deserts his cause, religion, political party, friend, etc.
  • A common vagabond; a worthless or wicked fellow.
  • break with established customs

  • One whose domicile lies at an appreciable distance from his or her place of business.
  • A value far from most others in a set of data: “Outliers make statistical analyses difficult” (Harvey Motulsky).
  • Geology A portion of stratified rock separated from a main formation by erosion.

outlier or outsider concept on a digital tablet with a cup of te

Be an outlier in a world of conformists.

Snap out of the endless brainwashing machine spin-cycle. Stop rinsing your brain with their waterboarded indoctrination. Deviate from the clones and drones, the conditioned sameness, uniformity, and conformity. Outliers spawn originality. Innovative ideas emerge on the edges. These ideas live outside the box and beyond the lines of control and societal boundaries.

Thinking Outside The Box

Revel in your independence and uniqueness. Discover who you are and not who you “should be” according to their “conditions” and “program”. Take personal inventory of where you conform and where you rest on the ledge as an outlier. Time to break out of the conditioning and the programs you’ve been trained to believe. Break up with this dysfunctional conditioned fantasy. The act of rebellion challenges the system, disrupts conventional thinking, and is a catalyst for growth and change.

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Will you be the aberration? Are you willing to take a risk and step out of the crowd, the herd, and the herd mentality? It’s time for each of us to be the outlier in a world of conformists. It’s time to detach from the the status quo, the puppet strings, and be bold enough to walk on our own towards an improved reality that we co-create.

Are you done? Time to Disrupt the System

Are you done with the old paradigm? Done with the status quo? Done with the power dynamics at play? Done with being a manipulated pawn in their twisted game? Done with the political tug of war and the pushing, pulling, and pitting of people against each other towards compliance, submission, and control?

Done with being conditioned, herded like cattle and sheep, and groomed to comply to the deceptive narratives that benefit the few?

Done with mass media disseminating news content and “advertorials” that have been bought, sponsored, and paid for, by the very companies and governmental agencies that we know are corrupt, out of integrity, and who regularly deceive the public? Done with the current restrictive social media atmosphere that has become an unsafe and unwelcome space for dissenting views and truth-tellers?

Despite how horrible things have been, and the nosedive we’re in, we haven’t hit bottom yet. The veil continues to dissipate and lift. And at times, the veil certainly feels more like a blanket of fog made out of cement. It’s time to disrupt the system and take your jackhammer out.

Time to create an avant-garde system that has the best interest of the populace in mind. Use the fork in the path to pivot, to course correct, to strategize, to critically think for yourself, and trust yourself. Determine how you want to engage, move forward, and envision your future.

There is a better way to navigate and create change. It is up to us to be the catalyst to shift in the direction we want to go. We are the product. Break out — be free!

Is anyone paying attention to the absurdity of this widely accepted, yet warped social media “game” that we are currently participating in and willfully abiding by? Have we lost our ability to critically think about the consequences of our media engagement? Through our involvement and consent, have we forfeited all sense of autonomy, privacy, and sense of self?

We have slid off the slippery slope right into the arms of the captors and fallen off the cliff of reality. The masses gullibly ran in droves right into the trap while disclosing, divulging, and revealing themselves, and mapping their lives. The captors gleefully and strategically have us right where they want us. Was this all part of their master plan?

Incentive Trap

FaceBook launched on February 4, 2004 as the Lifelog project of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), the Department of Defense’s research department closed. Auspicious timing and creepily coincidental. The Pentagon cancelled the Lifelog project, which was intended as a massive database devised to track your entire existence. Since many start-ups are funded by CIA front agencies, what did we expect?

What has really been the purpose of FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram, Twitter, and other prominent social media platforms? Were they really innocently designed as a creative outlet for expression and a free service to connect us socially? Or were they always private companies with ulterior motives, masquerading as a public utility, and established to commodify our lives, monetize our actions, aggressively track our shopping habits, behaviors, trends, preferences, and locations, to control us? Perhaps even predict where we’re headed, including outbreaks, activism efforts, and crises? What happens if, and when, we defect and flee from their pervasive clutch of control?

It’s certainly not a secret we’re being tracked and surveilled as we interact with one another in this corralled ring of communication, interaction, and constant connectivity. After all, we are the ones freely dispensing the digital diary of our lives. Expressing our behaviors, thoughts, opinions, preferences, tendencies, and images, on a blinking neon display for anyone who will bear witness to us, the product.

We’ve become the product within these free services that are embedded with advertising, sponsored ads, paid boosts, and suspicious ads that emerge in your news feed after you had an in-person private conversation about needing a particular product or service.

What are you trading for access to this “free” service to log your life, catalogue your actions, map your locations with “check in”, post what you made for dinner, where you shop and what you buy, photos of your children and pets, an itinerary of who you spend time with, what issues you focus on, updates to your profile picture, photo tags of your closest friends and family, the incessant practice of taking selfies and gifting your biometric data, and infinitely more.

New York, Usa - May 28, 2018: Tourists Taking Selfies In From On

Have we been deceptively co-opted and are we willing participants? Somehow we traded convenience, participation, and connectivity for privacy, freedom, and time, as we yielded our data, our habits, our beliefs, interactions, relationships, choices, and preferences. Is it worth trading your autonomy, privacy, and sense of self, for the hours of time spent scrolling, clicking, liking, following, sharing, and giving yourself and your data away through your tracked digital life map?

The current social media platforms have not only captured our attention with their lustrous technology, but they’ve captured our experiences. They’ve captured us – in their all encompassing, oceanic interNET. And we fell for the bait.

Hook, line, sinker.

Hook, line, — sucker.

Baits, Hooks, Sinkers Preparing For Carp Fishing.

Look, realign, — be a thinker!

It’s a ripe and critical time to adjust our social media trajectory, consider the implications for using this technology, and what we are actually trading by using surveillance and “Lifelog” based platforms like FaceBook and Instagram.
